The Furlow-Bingham Educational Endowment
Central to the mission of the division of plastic surgery is the
education of the next generation of plastic surgeons. Changing
times have eliminated the financial resources that supported
some of the educational opportunities for resident development.
Donations to the Furlow-Bingham Educational Endowment will
support the following:
- - Attendance at meetings and educational seminars
- - Visiting professors
- - A reference library
- - Support for resident research
- - Laboratory for microsurgery training
Dr. Leonard T. Furlow completed his plastic surgery residency
training at UF and later served as the division's interim chief
in 1971. He developed the "double opposing z-palatoplasty,"
known around the world as the Furlow Palatoplasty. Dr. Hal G.
Bingham established the Burn Unit at Shands at UF in the 1970s.
He is a legend in the field for his "Socratic Method" of
teaching surgical residents.
The Maurice J. Jurkiewicz, M.D., Professorship in
Plastic Surgery
This endowment will help UF attract the most promising surgeons
and offer the best training to our students and residents. As a
surgeon, educator and researcher, Dr. Jurkiewicz touched many
lives. With your help, his influence will reach a new generation
and help us shape the division of plastic and reconstructive
surgery into one of the finest units in the country.
Dr. Jurkiewicz was UF's first plastic surgeon. He led a
paradigm shift in plastic and reconstructive surgery, through
his work in the operating room and classroom. He championed the
importance of scientific inquisition, leading the field away
from the days of trial and error. He challenged those around him
to be the best that they could be.
