RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Beaver's research interests focus on improving the care of patients undergoing both thoracic aortic and cardiac surgery. Ongoing clinical trials are studying novel surgical techniques to treat atrial fibrillation and stent grafting for thoracic aortic aneurysms. Improved surgical treatments for heart failure are also being investigated. Dr. Beaver is the principal surgical investigator at The University of Florida for the NIH sponsored STICH trial, which has been evaluating the SVR (surgical ventricular restoration) procedure and coronary artery bypass surgery for heart failure. Additional clinical trials are evaluating newer pharmacologic agents to improve postoperative care by reducing pulmonary hypertension and renal failure.
In collaboration with Dr. Lyle Moldawers' laboratory, Dr. Beaver has been characterizing the cytokine cascade that occurs following lung transplantation. Dr. Beaver's own laboratory employs an optical mapping system developed with Dr. William Ditto, Chief of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Florida. Ongoing projects are investigating the interaction between atrial electrical wave fronts and the ablation lines created by the novel energy sources that have been introduced to treat atrial fibrillation.
