RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Beierle's primary focus in the laboratory is the study of cell survival signals in neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a pediatric solid tumor of neural crest origin. This tumor is unique in its biologic behavior, in that, when it presents in infants the primary tumor and even metastasis will often spontaneously regresses and disappears with limited therapy. However, older children presenting with metastatic disease have a dismal prognosis. Dr. Beierle would like to elucidate the mechanisms that are responsible for this behavior. Her laboratory has been investigating a number of survival signals and pathways including VEGF, IGF, Bcl-2, survivin, AKT and FAK.
