RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Chen's current research interest is in tissue engineering. He is interested in enhancing the understanding of tissue regeneration and in particular, the ability for creating neointestine. He has used biomaterials as a scaffold in animal models to regenerate neointestine. Patients with short bowel syndrome do not have adequate absorption capacity and transplantation is the best therapy. Problems include graft rejection, graft vs. host problems, and inadequate donor supply. Tissue engineered bowel may offer a better solution.
