Research Training in Burns and Trauma

The Laboratory is committed to post-graduate research training for surgeon-scientists and Ph.D. graduates. One, two or three year fellowships are available for qualified individuals with interests in academic careers in clinical medicine and medical research.

Surgical residents in training (and residents in other critical care disciplines) from the University of Florida College of Medicine and other accredited residency programs are encouraged to apply. Research fellowships are generally offered to candidates who have successfully completed their second or third clinical year (PGYII and PGY III), although residents who are at other stages of their training program are encouraged to contact us for additional information.

Residents in training have the opportunity to collaborate with a large number of investigators within the Department of Surgery, as well as within the College of Medicine. These include faculty in the basic sciences, the Gene Therapy Center and the Brain Institute.

Ph.D. awardees seeking post-graduate training in inflammation biology are also encouraged to apply.

Degree seeking candidates are encouraged to apply. The University of Florida College of Medicine offers trainees the opportunity to enroll in programs leading to the M.S. in clinical research and Ph.D. degrees.

Two courses are required of all trainees in the first year: Issues in the Responsible Conduct of Research (VME 6767) and Fundamentals of Research Design (STA 6200).  Additional courses within the Medical School, Graduate School, and the College of Veterinary Medicine are also available to all trainees in discussion with their research and clinical mentors.

For those individuals who seek a two year research experience in gene therapy and molecular genetics as it applies to burn and trauma research, the laboratory has recently been awarded an NIGMS training grant entitled, Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy in Burns and Trauma T32 (GM-08721-05). Specific details about the training program and its application process can be obtained at Program Overview and Direction. A flyer summarizing salient details of the program is available as a PDF file at Program Announcement.
