RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Seeger's research activities have been a combination of clinical and translational research, with these latter studies having evolved from previous more basic work. In addition, all of his research interests are directly related to the management of various aspects of peripheral arterial disease. In the area of aortic surgery, he has been interested for several years in the postoperative inflammatory response associated with major aortic reconstruction and the role of this inflammatory response in the development of single and multiorgan failure after aortic repair. Working with Dr. Moldawer's laboratory, Dr. Seeger and his associates have demonstrated the relationship between this inflammatory response and the development of postoperative complications, have identified mesenteric
ischemia, particularly associated with thoracoabdominal aorta aneurysm repair, as being a primary factor in the development of this inflammatory response, and more recently have identified circulating white cell gene profiles that may be class predictors for patients who develop single and multiorgan failure after major aortic reconstruction. In the area of the management of patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease, Dr. Seeger has investigated various aspects of the management of chronic mesenteric ischemia and clinical outcome after treatment of severe arterial occlusive disease associated with limb-threatening ischemia and identified several adjuncts to distal bypass to improve initial and long term graft patency and limb salvage. Finally, past investigations, in conjunction with the Center for Biomaterials in the College of Engineering sought to develop new techniques for use of endovascular stents for drug delivery. This work led to several new stent coating techniques and several patents, but currently is inactive.
