The laboratory of Thomas M. Beaver, MD, Assistant Professor in The Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery is located in room M612 in the Medical Sciences Building. The laboratory is involved in ongoing projects with Dr. Lyle Moldawer's laboratory on the study of the cytokine profile and reperfusion injury following lung transplantation. Also, in association with Dr. Laurie Davies from the department of Anesthesia, the inflammatory response in "on-bypass" versus "off bypass" coronary artery revascularization is under investigation. 

Since 2002, the primary focus of Dr. Beaver's laboratory has been the study of the arrhythmias in cardiac surgery. In collaboration with Dr. William Ditto, PhD, Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, an optical imaging system has been setup to image the electrical activity in Langendorff perfused cardiac preparations. Current projects include investigations into the importance of transmurality in atrial ablation strategies and identification of the key components for the successful ablation of atrial fibrillation.
